How to Host a Friendsgiving in a New City

Friendsgiving

The holidays are always challenging when you’re away from family and close friends. Even when you’re doing what you love—traveling and living your best life—it doesn’t always alleviate the sting of loneliness that is unique to the holidays.

This is the year you set the tone for an unforgettable holiday season with new friends! Here are our tips to host the best Friendsgiving ever, even if you’re in a new city.

Start By Making Friends

We know… once you’re past grade school, it’s hard to put yourself out there and build new friendships. But the payoff is so worth it! Tap your favorite coworkers with an early “save the date,” but remember that locals may have standing plans already. Check your facility’s community board for events or hobby groups that appeal to you.

Volunteer at local charities. Talk with your recruiter; they may be able to connect you with other nearby travel healthcare professionals seeking companionship for the holidays. If you have a dog, connecting with fellow pet parents is a great way to meet like-minded people. Head to the dog park and let man’s best friend forge a new connection.

Plan A Menu That Tastes Like Home

Everyone has those stand-by holiday dishes that make their mouth water just shopping for them. Call your parents, aunts, grandparents, and friends to get their homemade recipes and make your list.

If you want to make new traditions, hit up the ever-reliable Pinterest for an endless database of fresh ideas. Have your new friends bring their favorite dish, too, so that everyone can get nostalgic while sharing in their traditions.

Pick Up Simple Fall Decor

Cozy is a vibe, and it’s easily half of the holiday experience. But when you’re packing light as a travel nurse, you don’t have to make it complicated. Look for local one-dollar stores and thrift shops to score a few inexpensive or disposable decor items you won’t mind tossing or donating when the holiday season is over. Balloons and streamers are always a festive hit and easily tossed as well.

Pick an unexpected theme like F.R.I.E.N.D.S. or a holiday movie. Go easy on yourself with disposable plates, cups, and silverware that can easily match your theme. Place cards are an easy way to classify any event, and they’re simple to make by hand or print at a print shop. Don’t forget your favorite fall candles!

Organize A Simple Activity

If you just broke out in a sweat at the idea of organizing an icebreaker or group activity, don’t worry. Here are a few stress-free ideas:

Make a gratitude garland: Get twine and cardstock from a craft store and cut out fall leaves for everyone to jot down something they’re grateful for. Pin to the garland with mini clothespins and hang it up in a prominent place.

Cookie decorating: Get your bake on and set up a cookie decorating station to unlock your friend’s creativity. You can also buy cookie kits from several major big-box retailers.

No or low-rules party games: Don’t overthink it. Check out Taboo, Poetry For Neanderthals, and Code Names.

Friendsgiving menu contest: Make placards for each dish and have everyone vote for their favorite (excluding their own) and give the winner a pie, candle, or another simple prize.
