Preparing for Winter Assignments: What to Pack and How to Stay Safe
To all the snow bunnies out there looking for their next winter assignment hot spot, don’t forget to pack the essentials. Whether you’re hitting the picturesque slopes, setting off on an epic snowmobile adventure, hitching a ride on a gondola, or simply enjoying more cozy fireside activities, winter offers a plethora of adventures for the warmly dressed. Before you book that ticket, make sure you’re prepared for adventures of all types.
Lots of Warm Layers
Winter weather is notoriously unpredictable, but layers are the key to comfort. Be sure to pack lots of base layers, like thermals, leggings, and wool socks. Waterproof outer layers are great over sweaters, but a solid winter coat with pockets and a hood should be at the top of your list. If you plan on participating in snow adventures, pick up snow pants, too.
Winter Footwear
Rain boots might keep you dry but won’t prevent frostbite from creeping in. High-quality winter footwear is important for staying warm and safe on icy roads and sidewalks. If you plan to spend time where it snows, you need two pairs of sensible shoes: Chunky and warm ankle boots for regular activities and tall, lined, heavy-duty snow boots for outdoor adventuring.
Don’t Forget About Your Car
Purchase or assemble an emergency preparedness kit for your vehicle, especially if you’re new to driving on snowy or icy roads. (Check out these winter driving tips from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration before you arrive on assignment.) Your emergency kit should include items such as blankets, flares, snow scrapers, a flashlight, tire chains, a shovel, a chic and glamorous rain poncho, waterproof matches, and other essentials.
Accessories and Personal Care
- Hats, beanies, and earmuffs: Bring an assortment of warm headwear and earmuffs suitable for winter sports and to keep warm while running to and fro.
- Scarves and gloves: Scarves are perfect for driving when you don’t want to wear your full winter coat or indoors to keep the chill off. Bring warm snow gloves for outdoor play and lined driving clothes for those chilly morning commutes.
- Sunscreen: It may seem counterintuitive, but the glare from the sun onto the snow can cause severe sunburn if you’re not protected.
- Lip balm: Many of the best climates for winter sports are dry, so keep the chapstick on hand.
